U MONTRÉAL OFF TO 5-0 START
With reigning Canadian University baseball champions McGill Redmen yet to play due to a rainout on Thursday, the U de Montréal Carabins and Carleton Ravens are the only two undefeated teams to emerge from the CCBA’s first week of competition.
The Carabins sit atop the Northern conference at 5-0 while the Ravens are at 3-0. Both teams defeated the University of Ottawa Gee Gees who, despite two close losses to Montreal have limped out of the gate at 0-5.
The Ravens have done it with exceptional pitching and timely hitting, only surrendering 3 runs over their first three games, including a shutout performance by starters Troy Clarke against Concordia and an impressive complete game outing by Derek Harken against Ottawa.
The Carabins have succeeded with a limited roster and stand-out play by Simon Brisebois both on the mound and in the batters box leading his team in IP, ERA and hits.
In the Atlantic conference, perennial heavyweight UNB leads with a 3-1 record but the conference is still tight after the first week of play.
